Arthur Wardle: Basset Hounds, oil on canvas. The basset hounds most likely belonged to Queen Alexandra.
This picture was reproduced on cigarette cards, postcards, calendars and boxes of chocolates, which are collectibles today.
Arthur Wardle (1864-1949), born in London, had his first piece displayed at the Royal Academy at the age of 16. He painted a wide variety of animal subjects with equal skill. His work may be divided into two categories - domestic and exotic. Exotic collection contains overseas animals - tigers, leopards. He remains one of the best known dog painters of the 19th and 20th centuries, and he is particularly known for his paintings of terriers.
